Most carpet cleaning in London homes is done by hot water extraction: a pre-spray to break down soil, then a machine that injects hot water and extracts it along with the dirt. It gives the deepest clean but the carpet needs a few hours to dry. Low-moisture methods dry faster and suit offices and occupied homes.
Allow four to eight hours for extraction-cleaned carpets to dry, with windows open or heating on. Upper-floor flats without parking are fine for portable machines; truck-mounted units need the van close enough to run hoses, which rules them out across much of central London.
Red wine, coffee and pet accidents usually come out if they have not been treated with the wrong product first. Bleach marks, burns and dye loss are permanent and need a patch repair.

You can walk on it straight away in clean socks. Furniture should go back on protective pads, and the carpet should be dry within a few hours.
